The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance, School of the Arts is proud to offer undergraduate programs in music performance, music education, and music therapy. The department also offers a B.A. degree in music and a new five year masters program in each area.
B.M. in Music Education - provides students excellent training to teach vocal and instrumental music in elementary and secondary schools. Upon completion of the degree, graduates receive Colorado State Certification to teach in public schools. The program is comprehensively structured to allow for continued study at the graduate level.
B.M. in Music Therapy - prepares the student for a career in the use of music for the restoration, maintenance, or improvement in mental and/or physical health. Music therapists generally work with other health care professionals to create interdisciplinary programs for improving their clients' well being. The music therapy curriculum includes a strong emphasis in music, the neurosciences and psychology. It should be noted that Colorado State University is the only university in the central Rocky Mountain region providing undergraduate or graduate education in music therapy. The Center for Biomedical Research in Music, the research arm of our program, was recently designated by the Colorado State Legislature as a "Program of Excellence”, and is a world-recognized affiliated center for music and brain research.
B.M. in Composition: designed to prepare the student to compose original music for a wide variety of venues including live concerts, music to accompany film, video, dance, and theatre.
B.M in Performance - designed for the student preparing a career as a professional performer, studio teacher, or college professor. Colorado State University provides intense training in vocal or instrumental performance. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in music history, music theory, and performance, while ensuring flexibility for continued study at the graduate level. The student has numerous opportunities for performance during completion of this degree including junior and senior recitals.
B.A. in Music - designed to allow students to study music within the larger context of a liberal education. The BA in music is structured to provide a strong emphasis in applied music, theory, and music literature with a concentration in another academic area. As an example, the student, in addition to the music core, has the option of studying business, history, foreign languages, or psychology. Graduates have a broad background that prepares them for various employment opportunities or graduate school.
5-Year Masters Degree - undergraduates enrolled in music bachelor’s degree program and who have completed at least 75 credits toward their degree, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00, may apply for admission to a combined bachelor’s/master’s degree program. These programs have been designed to encourage students with strong scholarly/research or performance interests to begin their graduate programs during their junior year. The graduate degree is awarded after or concurrently with the award of a Baccalaureate.
Music Minor: students can earn a music minor by completing a total of 23 credits. More than 23 credits may be required due to prerequisites. A total of 11 lower division and 12 upper division credits must be completed.
Performance Certificate: students studying a music field other than music performance are now offered a chance to attain a higher level of training in their applied studies, a level equal to that of a performance major.
